Columbia College Chicago
Arts, Entertainment &
Media Management
Founded in 1977, the Columbia College Arts, Entertainment & Media Management Department provides educational opportunity and training for students seeking to manage or administer creative endeavors. AEMMDept offers education in the classroom and in the field for those who want to manage creative enterprises, including the arts, entertainment, media, and fashion industries; course work to enhance the knowledge of those already active in the field; and classes to assist the individual artist or entrepreneur with economic, legal, or business issues.
In addition to the mastery of the foundations of business, Management students develop skills in communication, and quantitative and qualitative analysis. Emphasis is placed on developing within the student the means to understand people, work effectively, form sound judgments, and demonstrate social responsibility. Undergraduate students in AEMMDept may select from seven concentrations: Arts Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management, Fashion Retail Management, Media Management, Music Business, Performing Arts Management, Sports Management, and Visual Arts Management.
The Arts, Entertainment & Media Management Graduate Program (leading to the degree of Master of Arts Manage-ment) was established in 1982, to help meet the growing need for proficient arts administrators, managers, and entrepreneurs. Successful arts management is critical to the continued vitality of modern cultural institutions, creative enterprises, and arts organizations. If the public is to benefit, skilled arts managers must facilitate and enhance the work of artists. Capable managers combine aesthetic sensibilities and business acumen. Their financial, legal, and organizational decisions make it possible for artists to realize their vision and to share it with the audience. In short, successful arts managers are partners in a collaborative process.
The AEMM Graduate Program offers students the opportunity to specialize in five concentrations: Arts in Youth and Community Development, Media Management, Music Business, Performing Arts Management, and Visual Arts Management. AEMM Graduate students study the management methods and skills needed to function effectively in the increasingly complex environment of today’s cultural institutions and businesses. AEMM Graduate students also learn to appreciate the value of the arts; to understand the economic, social, and political climate in which they operate; and to anticipate the challenges of the new technology.
The College utilizes the City of Chicago as its campus, creating a stimulating artistic and professional climate for its students. The AEMM graduate and undergraduate curricula reflect the professional experiences of the faculty — more than one hundred full-time and part-time instructors who are working artist-performers and experienced managers and executives of leading arts, entertainment, and media organizations.
