| Spring break industry trip to NY
March 22-26, 2006, thirty-three AEMM Department students were given an insider’s look at their chosen industries when they participated in the AEMM Department’s annual New York industry tours. Starting with an opportunity to network with AEMM alumni who are now working professionals in New York, students also met industry leaders.
Six fashion management and fashion design students met the associate buyer of Jeffrey New York, toured Kevin Krier and Associates, a special events production company that stages fashion shows and events; and viewed exhibits at the Fashion Institute of Technology. They also had the opportunity to meet with the Director of Special Events of RUSH Philanthropic, the Marketing Director of Phat Farm, and the Public Relations/Marketing Director of Baby Phat. The Founder and the Vice President of Public Relations and Corporate Communications of Windsong Allegiance Apparel Group met with the students to discuss sales, design, and product development while the Associate Human Relations and College Relations Manager of Federated Merchandising Group, an industry leader in developing private brand merchandise, discussed product development with the group. Students also met with the Director of Public Relations of Tommy Hilfiger, the Community Outreach and Communications Manager of Kenneth Cole, and the Editorial and Production Associate of V Magazine/Visionaire Couture Magazine, who discussed all the aspects of a fashion, art, music, film, and architecture global magazine.
Twenty-five music business students met with the Manager of Public Affairs of ASCAP and participated in a panel discussion on membership, new media, radio, and licensing; met the Marketing Manager of EMMIS NY; and discussed the Apollo Theatre Foundation with their Head of Programming. Students were also given the opportunity to network industry professionals at SONY BMG Music Entertainment, Cutting Room Recording Studio, Intelligent Music Production, Co, Club AVALON, and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.
Two visual arts management students met with Curators and Directors at a variety of New York galleries, including Paula Cooper Gallery, Jack Shainman Gallery, Gagosian Gallery, Visionaire Gallery, Artists Space, Apexart, and the Leslie Lohman Gay Art Foundation. Students were also given the opportunity to meet the registrar of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who outlined the process and procedures the museum follows when it obtains and ships collections and individual pieces of art. The Educational Program Coordinator of the Whitney Museum of American Art discussed educational programming from an interpretational perspective, and students toured the Whitney Biennial 2006, Day for Night.
