AEMM hosts European arts management students

For two weeks in June, Columbia’s AEMM Department hosted twelve European students from the MBA program in International Cultural Management at the International Center for Cultural Management (ICCM) in Salzburg, Austria. Already working professionals in the European arts management industry, some holding a Doctorate Degree, the students entered the program to receive specialized training in international arts management practices.
The AEMM Department hosted the students during a module in Chicago, Leadership in Culture, which focused on American arts management practices. A later module will take the students to Shanghai, China. The Chicago module included three areas of study, led by AEMM faculty members: Cultural Entrepreneurship, with Joe Roberts; Cultural and Political Context, with J. Dennis Rich and Philippe Ravanas; and ICT and Media Management, with Mary Filice and Dawn Larsen. In addition to classroom studies, students created individual entrepreneurship projects, and visited arts venues around the city – including the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago Cultural Center, Harris Theater, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others – to learn how American arts venue are managed.
A great opportunity for Columbia to build relationships in Europe, the program has helped to make connections for AEMM students as well. Many of the ICCM students who participate in the module at Columbia have talked to AEMM students about European arts management perspectives and have hosted students at their venues when Columbia students visit Europe (see J-TermTravel and STudy in Vienna and Prague article below).

International Arts Management

The AEMM’s International Arts Management class, led by Arnold Breman, helps to bring globalization closer to the department. Each student is assigned an international mentor to work with throughout the semester. The mentors are professionals in the arts field, and bring their personal view of arts management as it relates to their regions of operation. Mentors, who volunteer their time, come from all over the world. The current semester’s mentors hail from Petion-ville, Haiti; Tunis, Tunisia; Brno, Czech Republic; Castries, St. Lucia; Tehran, Iran; London, England; Khorog, Tajikistan; Bogota, Colombia; Zanzibar, Tanzania; Damascus, Syria; Jaipur, India; Riga, Latvia; Talnin, Estonia; and Sofia, Bulgaria.
Towards the middle of the semester, the student and mentor select a topic that is related to the arts and culture of the mentor’s region. The student prepares a paper on that topic, which is sent to the mentor for review. This is an interesting project and the students have gained a lot from the mentors in the past.
