Freshman Meet & Greet
The AEMM Department kicked-off a brand new initiative, the AEMM Freshman Meet & Greet, aimed at engaging incoming freshman students. Developed by Phyllis Johnson and coordinated by Anna Bernadska, the AEMM Freshman Meet & Greet is designed to provide freshmen with learning and orientation opportunities, social interaction and networking opportunities, and exposure to industry professionals. The Meet & Greet will fulfill these goals through three basic types of programs: participation in The Forum, information and orientation events, and a student mentorship program.
The Freshman Meet & Greet has partnered with The Forum to encourage freshmen to learn from industry professionals. The Forum is a speaker-based program designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn from the experience of arts management professionals in an informal setting (see The Forum article).
Information and orientation events give freshmen a first-hand look at available college-wide and departmental resources, existing and new college projects and initiatives, and new courses and concentrations within the department. The events give students the tools they need in order to fully utilize Columbia’s growing resources. They also encourage interaction among Columbia students, faculty, and staff, helping students to create strong relationships within the College.
The student mentorship program, developed in collaboration with Columbia’s student organization Click, provides freshmen with support and advice from upperclassmen. Incoming freshmen are paired with upperclassmen mentors who serve as role models and aid them on a variety of topics related to their study at Columbia. Students are encouraged to meet with their mentors at least twice a month, to learn from their experiences.
As the AEMMDept continues to expand, there is a growing need to guide new students through not only the academic curriculum, but extra curricular activities and college-wide resources as well, in order to facilitate learning and encourage active participation in the college. The activities of the Freshman Meet & Greet are designed to orientate and engage students, to ensure their Columbia experience is as strong as it can be.
On Wednesday, September 25, the Freshman Meet & Greet hosted A Career in Independent Filmmaking: Strategies for Success with instructor Bob Cronberg. The event featured a screening of the short film UNA CAUSA NOBLE (A Noble Cause), followed by a discussion with the filmmakers, Miles Merritt and Gail Kempler. The film focused on the effects of the US’s policy to expedite citizenship for foreign nationals who enlist in the US armed forces. Well attended by AEMMDept classes and individual freshmen, the event gave students the opportunity to learn about the business of independent filmmaking.
